Stroud 1831 This extensive survey map of Stroud and numerous surrounding Parishes was produced at the time when Stroud was at the centre of an established clothing industry. The survey map details and in many cases names many of the mills (upwards of 90 at the time) situated on local rivers and streams. The survey report includes the Parishes of Painswick, Bisley, Standish, Pitchcomb, Stonehouse, Eastington, Randwick, Frocester, Leonard Stanley, King Stanley, Rodborough, Coaley, Woodchester, Minchinhampton, Nympsfield, Cam, Stinchcombe, Uley, Horsley, Avening, Cherrington, Dursley, Kingscote, Wotton under Edge, Newington Bagpath, Beverton, Ozleworth, and Nailsworth in Horsley. An interesting statement from the survey report follows. The peculiar features of this district are the situation of the mills on streams in deep ravines; the scattered and irregular manner in which the houses are built on the hill sides; and the contrast between the high land (in many cases either wood or common, with few inhabitants) and the valleys, studded with houses and thickly peopled.
