Europe Nova Europae 1606

Map of Europe "Nova Europae Descriptio..." from the famous cartographer Gerard Mercator (1512-1594) Mercator was a Belgian cartographer. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612), sometimes called Jodocus Hondius the Elder to distinguish him from his son) was a Flemish artist, engraver, and cartographer. He is best known for his early maps of the New World and Europe, for he re-established the reputation of the work of Gerard Mercator, and for his portraits of Francis Drake. He helped established Amsterdam as the center of cartography in Europe in the 17th century.

This is a large, exquisitely coloured facsimile from the copper engraved map of Mercator wonderfully produced by Hondius. It shows Europe for example with Scandinavia, Benelux, Germany, France, Spain, Italy. The map is decorated with a beautiful title cartouche.
