Australia and Oceania
This collection includes two superb sets of maps: Australian town plans and maps of Australian territories. Both sets are taken from The Royal Atlas & Gazetteer of Australasia, produced by J. G. Bartholomew for T. Nelson and Sons in 1890. The Bartholomew firm had strong links with Australia by 1890, the 21 year old J. G. Bartholomew having travelled extensively throughout Australia over a two month period in 1881. The atlas was available throughout Australia and sold in substantial numbers. As can be seen from these examples available here, the Bartholomew mapping of Australian town plans is very distinctive, being beautifully executed in shades of pink, yellow and green.
Our Irish collection includes two interesting pictorial maps: the Historical Map of Ireland and the Irish Family Names Map. Also available are a number of very attractive maps from some of our world atlases including a map of Ireland from “The College Atlas” by H.G. Collins, published in 1852. From our 17th Century collection we have a map of Ireland, originally published in 1635 by Willem and Johan Blaeu in there Theatrum Orbis Terrarum.
