Map of British North America, by Permission Dedicated to the Honourable Hudson’s Bay Company; Containing the latest information which their documents furnish. By their Obedient Servant John Arrowsmith.
This map was first engraved in 1832, but altered in successive editions through the 1850’s as new information reached London. This map carries the original publication date of 25th April 1844. The exceptionally detailed map for its time, in particular the West Coast, from Monterey north to the Behring Strait.
The map also presents fascinating notes of historical interest, for example “In Turton Bay on the South side of Igloolik Island, the Fury and Hecla were frozen up from October 3rd 1822 to August 8th 1823.
Captain George Francis Lyon commanded HMS Hecla under Captain Parry, on an expedition from England in a second attempt to find the Northwest Passage. The expedition left in 1821 with sister ship HMS Fury. Captain Lyon and his crew entered the Arctic region through Hudson’s Strait and travelled to Repulse Bay and the Melville Peninsula before stopping for the winter at Winter Island, eastward of the Frozen strait. The following summer saw HMS Hecla and HMS Fury travel further north and enter Fury and Hecla Strait. They were forced to turn back and winter at Igloolik before returning home to England in 1823 because of severe ice in Hecla and Fury Strait, and the onset of scurvy.
